CGT Trends for 2025: Driving the Future of Precision Medicine.

The Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) landscape continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, with 2025 expected to be a transformative year. Innovations in science and technology are paving the way for breakthroughs, but the industry still faces a number of critical challenges that must be addressed in order for it to evolve effectively. As we look ahead, we’ve identified several key trends that are set to be a hot topic for CGT in 2025: the standardization of processes and terminology, improving patient access, bolstering investor confidence, and ensuring patient privacy and data security.

In this blog, we’ll explore these trends and provide expert insights from leaders within TrakCel, a company at the forefront of CGT orchestration. Together, these themes highlight the road ahead for advancing precision medicine and scaling CGT solutions globally.

In 2025, the CGT industry will increasingly prioritize standardization to streamline operations and foster cross-functional collaboration. The absence of universal terminology and consistent processes has often created inefficiencies, especially as therapies scale internationally.

“The continued proliferation of software platforms to manage the CGT supply chain is leading to management inefficiencies and frustration among healthcare professionals. This situation will likely be exacerbated as more advanced therapies become available commercially. In 2025, we expect to see a continued push from healthcare providers for platform standardization to deliver a consistent user experience and ease the management burden for all,” says Dr Fiona Withey, CEO of TrakCel.

“There are a multitude of orchestration platforms (software that tracks, manages, and coordinates patient journeys for CGTs) currently available. Healthcare professionals at busy treatment centers may have to interact with several of these during a working day. Inconsistencies between platforms can lead to ‘portal fatigue’ for users. Standardization across platforms will help ease this frustration and boost efficiencies for the successful delivery of CGTs to patients,” adds Dr Withey.

At TrakCel, we’re passionate about being a driving force behind industry standardization, which is why we host a twice yearly IAB (Industry Advancement Board) with experts from all areas of the supply chain to gather feedback and identify a way to move us forward, together. If you would like to join our IABs then please send us a message via our contact form.

Despite the potential of CGTs, barriers to patient access remain a significant hurdle. High costs, limited geographic availability, and logistical complexities can prevent patients from receiving life-saving treatments.

“The pace of advancement of cell and gene therapies (CGTs) has been interesting to watch as they grow as a viable treatment option for hard-to-treat diseases. 2024 was a record year for CGT approvals, a trend we expect to continue in 2025 with the continued acceleration of the CGT Industry. We expect to see an increased focus on patient accessibility through increased productivity and efficiency across advanced therapy supply chains,” explains Dr Fiona Withey.

“I’m excited about the current crop of clinical trials addressing autoimmune conditions. The CGT Industry is holding its collective breath awaiting the first tranche of results from these studies; larger patient populations receiving CAR-T therapies will exacerbate some of the unsolved patient access concerns,” adds Dr Matthew Lakelin, Head of Consultancy & Co-Founder of TrakCel.

Antonios Spanos, Industry Advisor for TrakCel Consulting Services states: “Enabling access to more patients through better payment frameworks, utilization of more hospitals and referral centres, expansion to new regions.”

Some of the Milestone FDA Approvals in 2024:
  • Vertex’s approvals of CASGEVY (EU, USA).
  • Adaptimmune’s accelerated FDA approval for TECELRA.
  • Autolus’ USA BLA approval for Aucatzyl.
  • Orchard Therapeutics’ FDA approval of LENMELDY.
  • Iovance Biotherapeutics’ AMTAGVI received accelerated approval by the FDA to treat advanced melanoma.

Investor confidence will continue to be a driving force behind the CGT sector’s growth. As more therapies gain regulatory approval and demonstrate real-world success, there will be a greater emphasis on scalability and return on investment.

“While reduced investment in CGTs has been a common theme this year, there have been encouraging signs with recent announcements that we could be turning a corner. While we understand that investors need to see promising clinical data before making decisions, clinical data can only be generated if investors take a chance on early-stage companies with promising candidates. We hope to see renewed investor confidence in the promise of CGTs in early development in 2025,” says Dr Fiona Withey, CEO of TrakCel.

Investment Activity in 2024 Highlights this Potential:
  • Capstan Therapeutics closed a $175M Series B to advance an in vivo CAR-T candidate in autoimmune disorders,” noted Dr Akshay Peer, SVP of Product at TrakCel.
  • Arsenal Biosciences, Inc. raised $325M in a Series C for its pipeline of solid tumor candidates that use proprietary T-cell engineering technology.
  • Kyverna Therapeutics’ IPO in February raised almost $319M to develop cell therapies for autoimmune diseases,” highlighted Dr Akshay Peer, emphasizing the growing interest in CAR-T applications beyond oncology.
  • AvenCell Therapeutics raised $112M in Series B financing to advance both autologous and allogeneic switchable CAR-T therapies.
  • Obsidian Therapeutics raised $116M in a Series C to support its development of investigational TIL cell therapy for advanced melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer,” added Dr Akshay Peer, reflecting on the diversification of investment in CGT.

“The successful performance of the advanced therapies approved in 2024 and earlier will bolster investor confidence, strong commercial sales will demonstrate a significant return on investment in cell and gene therapies,” adds Dr Matthew Lakelin.

With CGTs relying heavily on sensitive patient data, safeguarding privacy and ensuring data security will remain top priorities.

“The sensitive nature of the data used in CGTs, often involving personalized treatments and handling of genetic material and information, combined with the large number of parties handling this data, will increase the need to focus on patient privacy and data security,” says Dr Fiona Withey.

“Navigating the country-specific and state-specific legislative data privacy frameworks can seem like a Sisyphean task when considering the unique demands of autologous cell therapies. To address these challenges, I expect the reliance of specialist consultants to proliferate in 2025,” explains Dr Matthew Lakelin.

At TrakCel, we prioritize robust data management frameworks to support privacy and compliance requirements.

Conclusion: Pioneering the Future of CGT.

As the cell and gene therapy sector enters 2025, the convergence of innovation and collaboration will define its trajectory. Addressing challenges around standardization, patient access, investor confidence, and data security will be critical to scaling the industry and delivering on its promise of transforming healthcare. At TrakCel, we remain committed to enabling the next wave of CGT advancements by orchestrating seamless and secure processes across the value chain. Together, we can drive the future of precision medicine – one patient at a time.
